The King James Version (KJV), commonly known as the Authorized Version (AV) or King James Bible (KJB), is an English translation of the Christian Bible used by the Church of England. Commissioned in 1604 and completed in 1611, it was the third approved English translation by the English Church authorities. The translation was initiated by King James I at the Hampton Court Conference, as a response to issues raised by the Puritans. Under James' instructions, a team of scholars translated the New Testament from Greek and the Old Testament from Hebrew, with the Apocrypha being translated from Greek and Latin. The King James Version gradually gained prominence and became the standard English translation for Anglican and Protestant churches in the 18th century, replacing the Latin Vulgate. The most commonly used edition today is based on the standard text of 1769, edited by Benjamin Blayney at Oxford.
